VJO is partner of an ongoing 3 years European project in the Leonardo da Vinci Programme of the Commission DG XXII of Europe called ORTHO-ICON submitted by Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München Germany.
ORTHO-ICON ORTHO-ICON is a three years European partnership (4 EU, 2 EFTA countries) pilot project which will develop and implement short term, intensive, technology training courses (content and method), so as to improve the ability of Orthodontics teachers and trainers to use open and distance learning materials (including multimedia educational software). In this way it will encourage the innovative use of these training materials and of new training delivery methods in initial and continuing vocational training in Orthodontics, so as to improve Orthodontic continuing training and life-long learning and let it adapt to future, anticipated training and qualification needs. The project is bound to accomplish its aims by fostering links among field leaders to transfer technological innovation in the context of co-operation between telecommunication experts, multimedia systems experts and university orthodontic faculty members in Europe. To define the participating Orthodontists (network of teachers and private practitioners) as a test platform, the project will first identify their skill and training needs in order to enable the transfer of technological innovations and their application. Technology training courses will be designed accordingly, and delivered to them at an early stage of development. Apart from live seminars, the courses and the educational materials will be initially available on paper and CD-ROMs, so as to allow use by persons who are not very familiar with more advanced informatics/ communications applications and/or have access only to basic multimedia equipment. Existing educational materials will be made available to them early to serve as a stimuli for them to introduce the new training delivery methods. Later on, courses and materials will be made also available on-line on the network (Web-Sites), developed within the NORTH-SOUTH Leonardo project, which will also be used to monitor the progress of the project and evaluate the response of the targeted users. Feedback from the trainers will assist improve and make the courses more intuitive, effective and rewarding. The proposal will - as part of its content - include the widespread dissemination of results throughout Europe with the assistance of the Association for Dental Education in Europe. Apart from university teachers, the beneficiaries of the project include specialists in Orthodontics, general dental practitioners, and community health administrators. Complementing the Socrates project ORTHODL and the Leonardo project NorthSouth, this Leonardo project offers a unique opportunity to link in an innovative way different areas of training, i.e. incorporate within the initial training of Orthodontists (taken care by ORTHODL) elements that will allow their further updating and life-long learning, through the training of their teachers accomplished herein. A following project will aim at rendering the training components given through ORTHO-ICON fully recognisable in Europe. |
